Best Art Direction
Dreamgirls - 1950’s - 1970’s Motown Pop
The Good Shepard - 1940’s - 1950’s East Coast Upper Class founding the CIA
Pan’s Labyrinth - Spain in the midst of it’s Civil War as it blends with a girl’s fantasies
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest - 16th Century Caribbean people mixing it up with sea creatures like Davy Jones.
The Prestige - Rival Victorian Magicians in a deadly game of one-upsmanship.
This one’s up for grabs. Each of these nominees has a distinct flavor for the period that they portray and do it well. Normally Dreamgirls would be behind the other nominees, it’s non-nomination for Best Picture may give it an edge here. Pan’s Labyrinth’sfantasy scenes also give it an edge.
Best Visual Effects
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Poseidon
Superman Returns
Poseidon moves water in ways not seen on film since The Perfect Storm and Superman (like the original film) makes you believe a man can fly (not to mention stopping a falling airplane in the process), but it’s Pirates has the edge here. In addition to being the biggest money maker of the lot (which this is the only category where that is a real factor), that’s not makeup on the Sea creature crew as many believe, it’s on-set motion capture. In addition to being wonderful visuals, it is also a technical marvel (yet another factor here).
Best Makeup
Apocalypto
Click
+Pan’s Labyrinth
Apocalypto makes us believe we are seeing real Mayans by way of piercings and body motions and Click believably morphs and ages it’s characters thanks to makeup legend Rick Baker (who did something similar in Coming to America and The Nutty Professor (1996), both of which he was nominated in this category for (and won the latter). That said Pan’s Labyrinth will win for it’s fantastic blend of fantastic creatures with the brutal realities of war. Fun to note: although Pan’s work was done by newcomer Sandra Tejedor, much of the design is influenced by horror Director del Toro’s 2004 collaboration with Rick Baker on Hellboy (See Foreign Film analysis). Trivia: Pan’s legs in the film are real; del Toro himself designed the rig and the actor’s real legs were digitally removed.
Best Costumes
Curse of the Golden Flower
The Devil Wears Prada $
Dreamgirls
Marie Antoinette
The Queen
Flower gives us a glimpse at China’s Tang Dynasty; Antoinette 18th century France. Dreamgirls has the looks and feel of 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s pop culture. Queen and Devil give us the extremes of Modern styles, showing conservative and practical Royal attire Vs. Modern Chic. That said, this category has a tendency to lean towards Western period films, so Antoinette and Dreamgirls are likely to win here. |
