Oscar Cheatsheet: Song, Score, and Sound
Best Song
“I Need to Wake Up” from An Inconvenient Truth, Written and Sung by Melissa Etheridge
“Listen” from Dreamgirls, Sung by Beyonce Knowles
“Love You I Do” from Dreamgirls, Sung by Jennifer Hudson
“Our Town” from Cars, Written by Randy Newman, Sung by James Taylor
“Patience” from Dreamgirls, Sung by Eddie Murphy and Anika Noni Rose

Dreamgirls seems like an obvious choice (given the odds), but that’s where I’m going to go here. I think “Patience” is the most likely candidate since, although somewhat of a pop song, it also says a lot about the characters in the film at the time that it is sung. Cars isn’t likely since Newman has already won in this category in the past. Fun Note: “Wake Up” is the first song to be nominated from a documentary and Newman’s cousin, Thomas, is nominated in the Best Score category this year.

Best Score
Babel
The Good German
Notes on a Scandal
Pan’s Labyrinth
The Queen

In Babel, last year’s winner for Brokeback Mountain Gustivo Sanataolalla uses Transcultural Music cues blended with dissonant string pieces to glue together this film on communication. Multiple nominee (and non-winner) Thomas Newman gives German a 1940’s flavor with his score (though his cousin Randy is also nominated this year for Best Song). Minimalist composer Philip Glass create a fearful and threatening state of mind in Notes, evoking both classical and operatic functions without being too big. Javier Navarrette’s music gives Pan’s Labyrinth a mystical quality with the sounds alone. Alexandre Desplat makes excellent use of trumpet, harpsicord, and strings to give The Queen the royal quality it deserves. So far as the competition goes, this one is up for grabs, even taking into account Babel and Queen’s nominations in the Best Picture race.

Best Sound Mixing
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Dreamgirls
Flags of Our Fathers
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

People tend to confuse Sound Mixing Vs. Sound Editing. Put it this way: Editing gives the ingredients (a complete sound idea), Mixing is putting it all in a blender. This category comes down to the best prepared smoothie wins. With the exception of Dreamgirls, all of the nominees here are Action / War movies. Dreamgirls has an edge in this category since all of the other nominees here are nominated in the Sound Editing category and the mix of score, song, and dialogue are very well done here.

Best Sound Editing
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Flags of Our Fathers
Letters From Iwo Jima
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

As mentioned before, this category is all about ‘the ingredients’ making a complete sound idea. This category is up for grabs. Although Letters nomination for Best Picture is likely to give it a “High Profile” edge, the quality and popularity of all of the nominations here are at an equal level.
