Best Song
“I Need to Wake Up” from An Inconvenient Truth, Written and Sung by Melissa Etheridge
“Listen” from Dreamgirls, Sung by Cast
“Love You I Do” from Dreamgirls, Sung by Jennifer Hudson
“Our Town” from Cars, Written by Randy Newman, Sung by James Taylor
“Patience” from Dreamgirls, Sung by Eddie Murphy and Anika Noni Rose
Dreamgirls seems like an obvious choice (given the odds), but that’s where I’m going to go here. I think “Patience” is the most likely candidate since, although somewhat of a pop song, it also says a lot about the characters in the film at the time that it is sung. Cars isn’t likely since Newman has already won in this category in the past. Fun Note: “Wake Up” is the first song to be nominated from a documentary.
Best Score
Babel
The Good German
Notes on a Scandal
Pan’s Labyrinth
The Queen
Full analysis is pending, but the music from Babel and The Queen are first rate
Best Editing
Babel
Blood Diamond
Children of Men
The Departed
United 93
It’s easy for people not to take this category seriously but here’s a statistic for you of interest: since this category’s inception there have been approximately no Best Picture Winners to win WITHOUT a nomination here. That being said look for The Departed to win here as not only is it excellent editing, but Editing legend (and multiple winner) Thelma Schoonmaker’s best work.
Best Cinematography
The Black Dahlia $
Children of Men $
The Illusionist $
Pan’s Labyrinth
The Prestige
Although magician’s stories’ Illusionist and Prestige are full of beautiful visuals, Pan’s Labyrinth’s use of vibrant colors gives it the edge in this category.
Best Art Direction
Dreamgirls
The Good Shepard
Pan’s Labyrinth
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
The Prestige
This one’s up for grabs. Each of these nominees has a distinct flavor for the period that they portray and do it well. Normally Dreamgirls would be behind the other nominees, it’s non-nomination for Best Picture may give it an edge here. Pan’s Labyrinth’s fantasy scenes also give it an edge.
Best Visual Effects
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Poseidon
Superman Returns
Pirates has the edge here. In addition to being the biggest money maker of the lot (which this is the only category where that is a real factor), that’s not makeup on the Sea creature crew as many believe, it’s on-set motion capture. In addition to being wonderful visuals, it is also a technical marvel (yet another factor here).
Best Makeup
Apocalypto
Click
+Pan’s Labyrinth
Though Apocalypto makes us believe we are seeing real Mayans (and their piercings and the like) and Click believably ages it’s characters, it’s Pan’s amazing creatures that give it the edge here.
Best Sound Mixing
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Dreamgirls
Flags of Our Fathers
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Dreamgirls has an edge in this category since all of the other nominees here are nominated in the Sound Editing category and the mix of score, song, and dialogue are very well done there.
Best Sound Editing
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Flags of Our Fathers
Letters From Iwo Jima
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
This category is up for grabs. Although Letters nomination for Best Picture is likely to give it a “High Profile” edge, the quality and popularity of all of the nominations here are at an equal level.
Best Costumes
Curse of the Golden Flower
The Devil Wears Prada $
Dreamgirls
Marie Antoinette
The Queen
This category has a tendency to lean towards Western period films, so Antoinette and Dreamgirls are likely to win here.
Best Animated Feature
Cars GGGG, PGA, $
Happy Feet GG, PGA, $
Monster House GG, PGA, $
This competition is very close, but the big name voice Cast and high profile of Pixar films makes Car the likely winner. This is also the first year since 2000 that the entire category is made up of computer animated films
Best Animated Short
The Danish Poet
Lifted – By Pixar
The Little Match Girl – By Disney
Maestro
No Time For Nuts
Best Short Subject
Binta and the Great Idea (Binta Y La Gran Idea)
Eramos Pocos (One Too Many)
Helmer and Son
The Savior
West Bank Story
Best Foreign Film
Algeria – Days of Glory (Indigenes)
Canada – Water
Denmark – After the Wedding
Germany – The Lives of Others
+Mexico – Pan’s Labyrinth
The High Profile reception (and it’s five other nominations) makes horror Director Guillermo del Toro’s Spanish Civil War fairy tale Pan’s Labyrinth the edge. For an interesting contrast to this film with the same visual style, see del Toro’s quirky adaptation of Mike Mingnola’s Hellboy (2004).
Best Documentary (Feature)
+An Inconvenient Truth
Deliver Us From Evil
Iraq in Fragments
+Jesus Camp
My Country, My Country
Though I don’t like bringing politics into my analysis, the popularity of Al Gore (rather than his film) is likely to give Truth an edge here.
Best Documentary (Short Subject)
The Blood of Yingzhou District
Recycled Life
Rehearsing a Dream
